“The WHY and HOW of the New IDRN,” a 58-page white paper prepared by J. Matt Wallace, Executive Director of International Disaster Response Network (IDRN) Global, outlines a new vision and approach for IDRN to enhance the effectiveness of existing disaster response efforts worldwide.
A Call to Action to Make a Difference in the World of Disaster Response
The world of disaster response is vast, with millions of volunteers, countless organizations, and an overwhelming array of tools—from water filtration systems to training programs. Yet, most people, whether seasoned professionals or everyday individuals, struggle to navigate this complex landscape. Many don’t know who or what is out there to help, and trust in large organizations can falter when people hear reports of mismanagement. The International Disaster Response Network (IDRN) exists to change this by helping people find both large and small (as well as standard and imaginative) approaches to engage. IDRN’s mission is to become the world’s most trustworthy, accessible starting point for anyone engaging in disaster response, mitigation, or preparedness, multiplying the impact of existing efforts through awareness and collaboration.
Why IDRN Matters
Disasters cause over $300 billion in losses annually, yet coordination failures, mistrust, and lack of awareness hinder optimal response. IDRN addresses these by connecting you to the right people, resources, and networks without imposing control. We aim to empower you—whether you’re a responder, volunteer, or donor—by providing clear, reliable information and fostering organic collaboration. Our commitment to transparency, especially in financial dealings, ensures we remain an “anti-gravy train,” prioritizing integrity over excess.
How We’ll Do It
IDRN is building a decentralized, Web3-based platform using blockchain technology to create a secure, searchable database of responders and resources. While developing our decentralized app (dApp), the new IDRN will roll out the IDRN Global Village – a social media-style online system to build relationships. Phase Two will roll out the dApp, enabling you to find resources, connect with others, and share best practices. Phase Three will scale these efforts globally, amplifying impact through network effects. You can join as an individual or group, using our Service Sectors and Designator Codes to quickly identify your role and find relevant tools or partners. The “How” details are outlined in the extensive White Paper Appendix.
