A class 5 tropical cyclone ,Yasi, hit the Australia's northeastern coast line near Cairns, Queensland at 12:05 AM local time on February 3rd. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi has started to cross Australia's north Queensland coast.
The category five system is packing wind gusts up to 300-kilometres an hour and authorities are warning that very destructive winds will persist for several hours.
Residents are again being warned to stay indoors, even if it seems that the winds have died down.
Rick Threlfall from the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre says the eye of the cyclone is about 70 kilometres wide and will take some time to cross.
